We have long range and short range weapons. I'm still lousy with close range, but my current strategy which works 70% of the time is running circles around the enemies and picking then off one by one!

If I'm brave enough I'll get close enough for the melee attack!

How do YOU take care of these hostile lifeforms?

I recommend trying to find a staff melee weapon. It has a longer range so it's much easier to use (although it is slower than the sword and does less damage than the hammer.) Circling the enemies is definitely an important strategy though! Have you found an assault rifle yet?
